The first generation night vision devices GEN 0 were invented in 1939, by the German Army, during the World War II, which did not use the ambient light for amplification but, allowed the user to view the infrared lighting through the devices.

The second generation night vision devices GEN 1 were invented in  the 1960’s; it requires a small amount of ambient light thereby, neglects the usage of external infrared illumination.

The third generation night vision devices GEN 2 were invented in 1970’s; it makes use of the image intensifier tube for eliminating the multiple types of amplification.

The fourth generation night vision devices GEN 3 were invented in 1980’s; it makes use of the photocathode to promote the amplification factor.
